Ian Knight
I'm studying for a B.S. in Cloud and Network Engineering. This site is where I keep track of what I build, how it works, and what I ran into along the way.
IT Skills Kit
One HTML file of networking tools and labs: a log sanitizer, subnet and VLSM calculators, a config diff, a topology builder, and DNS, routing, and firewall labs. No server, no install, and everything runs in the browser.
The kit needs a mouse or trackpad. The write-up works anywhere.

Projects

Homelab Infrastructure
A NAS, a rack server running Proxmox, and around 30 Docker containers. Built for reliability, not just to prove it works.

Monitoring Stack
Uptime Kuma monitors all 32 containers and the scheduled cron jobs, organized into 11 groups (10 container stacks and one for cron), with automated alerting through one dashboard.

This Website
Built with Astro and Tailwind, deployed on Cloudflare Pages through an automated Git-based build pipeline.

Upgrading to Astro 7 without changing how it looks
This site was three major versions behind, and its dependency audit listed one critical and eleven high findings. I wanted the upgrade to be invisible to visitors, so I compared the old and new builds page by page. That turned up four problems a passing build would never have shown.

Network Topology Builder
Network diagrams go stale the day after you draw them. I wanted a tool that could build one from what the devices themselves say, and only draw a link when there's evidence for it. It's part of the IT Skills Kit, it runs offline, and nothing you paste leaves your machine.

The typo that stopped my Log Sanitizer
The Log Sanitizer sat on my site with a syntax error in it, and nothing looked wrong until I tried to take a screenshot of it working. Here's how I found one doubled word, and what I changed so the next one gets caught before it ships.
